Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women, Senator the Hon. Michaelia Cash, has today launched a new program recognising employers who are leading the way in gender equality.
Administered by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA), the WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation will be granted to employers who can demonstrate that they are amongst the best of the best when it comes to creating workplaces that equally support women and men to reach their full potential.
The citation replaces the former Employer of Choice for Women citation that is currently held by 125 organisations across Australia.
Helen Conway, Director of the WGEA said that, like its predecessor, the WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation would be highly sought after by employers.
“Employers of Choice for Gender Equality will have a significant advantage in differentiating their employer brand in a competitive marketplace. This will help them to attract top talent and retain existing staff.
“In addition, research shows that gender diverse organisations and teams have higher levels of creativity and better decision making.
“The citation criteria serve as a detailed road-map for employers looking to improve their organisational performance by ensuring gender equality in their workplace,” Ms Conway said.
Senator Cash said the new citation is another tool to help employers achieve progress on gender equality in the workplace.
“As business embraces the need for gender equality to increase productivity and competitiveness, the Australian Government will prioritise helping employers maximise the full potential of talented men and women in the work force. This citation provides employers with a powerful incentive to improve gender equality,” Senator Cash said.
Senator Cash also acknowledged the role of the new Workplace Gender Equality Act in driving change.
“The role of government is to assist organisations to achieve their gender equality goals. This is why the Workplace Gender Equality Act, and the work of the Agency in setting benchmarks and collecting data is so important. It will provide an evidence base to drive change that business can work with,” Senator Cash said.
Applications for the new citation will be open between 1 April–31 July 2014. The first Employers of Choice for Gender Equality will be named in November 2014.
